Hidden London tours and LGBTQ+ history
Here's something unique to get up to this month
Explore secret parts of the Underground this festive season
December in London can feel very Christmas-centric, but here’s something totally different to get up to this month.
Hidden London tours give you the chance to go behind the scenes of the London Underground — think disused stations, time capsule corridors and forgotten Tube platforms. They’re running throughout December, with extra dates between Christmas and New Year — ideal if you’re gift shopping for a transport enthusiast, or looking for a fun activity while school’s out (for the first time, kids aged 10 and over are welcome on tours).
Where exactly could you be exploring? Hidden London tours taking place this month include Aldwych ‘ghost station’, an Access All Areas tour of Charing Cross (where you’ll step onto platforms and concourses used in Skyfall and Paddington) and a visit to the disused bits of Baker Street, retracing the story behind the world’s very first underground railway. It’s panto season (oh yes it is)
Cheer the heroes, boo the villains, and sing along to catchy songs as Dame Choom Bouquet, the wicked sea witch Hydra and other characters take to the stage at The Little Mermaid Panto, opening in Wandsworth this weekend. With tickets from £12, it's excellent value, and relaxed performances with adapted lighting and special effects are available.
Uncover London’s LGBTQ+ history
Explore the queer capital of yore with the help of Dan Glass’ Queer Footprints: A Guide to Uncovering London's Fierce Past. The book celebrates hidden histories of struggle and joy — from the city's first Pride parade to the Brixton Fairies — and includes beautifully illustrated maps by Mark Glasgow, plus an accessibility guide.
See Cymbeline by candlelight
Shakespeare’s tragic comedy of love and rebellion comes to the candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in January 2025. This gender-swapped production sees King Cymbeline (a character based on the ancient British ruler, Cunobeline) become Queen Cymbeline, digging into the role of female leadership in a man’s world.
